Default Direct linking still work?

Hey,

I'm new to the site and I just saw SouthWest Airlines case study, but it seams like everything I see that shows direct linking is at least a year old.

Do you guys not recommend that route anymore or are people still having success with it?

Like everything, it can work, it all depends on the offer, your targets and how you market it.. I still have several direct linking campaigns making money..

I still always start a new campaign direct linking...

then if it converts... I do a custom landing page.

Direct linking definitely works. I usually start my campaigns with a split test between a LP and direct linking, just to get an idea what will perform better.

Plenty of my affiliates direct link profitably all the time. The key to profiting is to use it as the first step in your campaign. Sometimes you'll break even or even profit from the beginning with a direct link setup, but you increase your chances of eventual success if you customize for each group of targets you can identify.

Another reason not to tie yourself too firmly to direct linking is that not every offer is available without an exit popup and if you absolutely refuse to set up even a simple landing page, that eliminates lots of potential profitable offers for many CPV platforms. At the very least, be prepared to make a simple lander based on the content of the offer page. You can create a simple clickable lander using a quick edit of a screenshot of the offer page initially to test offers with exit pops on most traffic platforms and this opens up a huge number of additional options. Then when you move on to customize and test various landing pages for the campaign you already have some of the work done.
