Default Compete.com

I need help with reading or understanding Compete.com data. When I do some research on something like a military scholarship offer such as freemilitaryscholarships.com, I get the data that is below for referals. Can I trust the data? I don't quite understand it. The startmctoday.com is a biz op which compete is telling me is sending them traffic. The only thing I can think is that somebody is doing CPV traffic from the biz op to the military scholarship offer.

It would appear that would also be the case for dfas.mil as they have not advertising on their site either.

Referral Analytic

Show Destination Sites
Referring Site Referral Share
startsmctoday.com 6.49%
google.com 5.62%
sparknotes.com 5.53%
dfas.mil 5.42%
military.com 5.01%

This is just an example as I have seen others like this that don't quite make sense to me unless its CPV traffic thats getting pulled in but I don't know how that works or if it works that way for these stats.

I wouldn't rely on those results100%. Just use them as a guide. Then use them to brainstorm other ideas of URLs to be bidding on.I've found that typically these types of programs are not completely accurate.

I got this back from Compete.com. Not really an answer that I can make sense of given the data. dfas.mil has not ads, so several thousand people a month are going to freemiliaryscholarships.com just because they happen to think of it while on the site?

Hi,

Thanks for writing us. Our referral analytics is one of the most commonly misunderstood tool, because our data methodology is panel based so we have clickstream data directly from real users. When you see a site referring traffic it doesn't always mean there was an advertisement, rather it was the site the user was on directly before going to freemiliaryscholarships.com. You can think of this as upstream traffic and the destination referrals as downstream traffic. These referral analytics are what we like to call a 'true referral', when you see competitors or sites that are similar it often means that the user was doing research or had some brand awareness that was causing some comparison shopping or research. I hope this helps shed some light on your question. If you have any other questions about our product or services please feel free to drop us a line.
