Default What Am I Missing?

Ok, so I've been here just over a week. So far I've read pretty much every post here, opened accounts at Zango and MediaTraffic, and launched 35 campaigns across the two networks.

Yet between all those campaigns, I haven't managed to spend more than about $50, and have got <1000 impressions total.

Coach says do small batches of URLs. In the posts I've read where other folks were having trouble getting traffic, someone said put in lots of URLs. So I've got campaigns with anywhere from one (highly targetted!) to 350+ URLs.

And yet most of them are getting <10 impressions a day. The campaigns are in all sorts of markets.

There are only two that have got any kind of traffic. One was a horoscope campaign targeting massively generic domains (like habbo.com) and even then I can't get more than about 160 impressions a day, paying an average of 4 cents a click. If I run that to the recommended 1000 clicks per offer, sure I'll spend some money (eventually), but it's still going to take me forever. I've rotated a load of offers there, even some email submits, but no conversions, so I've dumped it for now.

The other is a campaign on MediaTraffic that's really weird - it gets 100 clicks in one hour (the same hour each day) then stops dead, and no more clicks all day. It's not my budget, because it doesn't even get to 10% of the budget. I've asked my account manager there what's going on, but from what I've seen so far, they're very slow in responding (I've got more new campaigns that have been waiting days to go live.)

SO - I must be missing something - where is all the traffic?

I'm running outbid reports twice a day, and making sure I'm number 1 on every url, but still no clicks!

I just tried signing up with TrafficVance to give that a go. After filling out their application form, the guy emails me and asks a bunch of questions (the same ones I already answered on the application form), and says they want $1000 up front. I reply, say fine I'll pay it, and he then writes back - gets my name completely wrong - and says actually they're not taking on advertisers unless I can provide a personal reference from an existing spending customer. Such unprofessionalism hardly inspires confidence.

Anyway, that aside, from what I've read here Zango and MT should have more traffic anyway. So how do I get some of it?

How many impressions/day are people here getting? Is such low volume normal? At Zango prices, I might as well go and buy untargeted traffic on the Google content network - there's more if it...

As far as MT goes I've only had success with one campaign there. Granted it's been a decent and steady one. Everything else there has been a bust or break-even campaign. From what I gather here, I'm not the only one. MT is a tough nut.

Zango you shouldn't have any problems with traffic, though it's nowhere near Google Content or TVance (from what I hear). Personally, I would not rotate a ton of offers, maybe 3 or so to start. That way you know what's working and what's not. Also, I can't stress this enough: rotate the same exact offer on different networks. You will be amazed at the results. For example I have a good campaign going on Hydra and Neverblue and Wotogepa when they used to have the offer, but cannot for the life of me get a conversion on that same exact offer on Copeac or CXDigital.

To get a boost in traffic RAISE YOUR DAILY BUDGET on that campaign. Sometimes that's all it takes for you to start spending money very quickly.

Also, I tend to go large on my campaign launches. I think my smallest campaign has 400 urls and my largest around 2000. Keep plugging in different but related keywords into coaches tool and then delete all the duplicates, clean your urls (takes forever) and you're good to go.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Are you saying that we'll get a boost in traffic if we, for example, increase daily budget from 50$ to 100$, even though the campaign was only spending 10$/day on a 50$/day budget?

Drhowe - thanks for the advice. Friday night I got a bigger campaign approved (it had been waiting ages) and that has been getting some decent traffic. None covnverting yet, but hey, I'm just pleased to get traffic!

Generally I'm rotating 2 or 3 offers at a time.

I tried adding 50% to the budget of my weird Mediatraffic campaign, the one that continues to get 100 impressions at the same hour each day. It got some extra impressions later on, so I think you're right, I think budget affects it even though its not getting anywhere near hitting the budget. In fact, it appears to be stopping at near enough 10% of budget every time.

I have asked my AM there about this, but still waiting for a reply.

In the meantime, I'm going to raise budgets on other campaigns by different percentages and track the results - it's the only way to understand for sure if they're throttling.

YES! It doesn't always work but sometimes traffic seems to start pouring in out of nowhere. This is also the case with Google Content sometimes, which is where I got the idea from.

Of course you have to be careful, I had a campaign on MT that was at $25 a day and I usually only spent $15 MAX. I changed the budget to $75 a day and spent over $50 every day without any conversions. Doh.

But like I said I've only found ONE campaign that converts on MT and I only decided to run it there b/c Zango already had a private deal with this merchant and wouldn't let me advertise there.

My MediaTraffic AM got back to me and confirmed this - MT at least DO throttle throughout the day based on your daily budget. So indeed, even if you never hit it, having a low budget can affect your impressions.

My own testing is bearing this out to varying degrees. However, the bigger issue seems to have been the number of urls. Anything less than a few hundred and I get virtually no traffic, even with a silly daily budget.

If you think about it, they have to throttle things when there's a low budget. You won't get full exposure. They have to in order to keep your costs within acceptable limits.
