Arrow The shadiest most BH things you've done/heard of

CPV/PPV is shady business, there's no doubting that.

I'm still getting my feet wet, and have various ideas (regarding hat colour i recken about this colour )

It's in my nature, ever since i was a kid i was always looking at ways to bend the rules and explore new things that you weren't supposed to know and do.

I've just bought a microphone and have a nice female to do vocal work with... so will be giving that a try very soon (Also got a little cloaker so TV wont be played the audio)

^ Audio is a little shady right? Cookie stuffings the obvious choice, but doing it intelligently, showing valid referers to the merchants, showing TV a valid page where they wont get stuffed and only stuffing the visitor once every X days.

Any other shady tactics people have come across within this mystical realm of CPV? Popups are another one i imagine.... ?

I'm going to try and stop being overwhelmed at the possibilities and just make an educated decision of a good traffic site... female demographic... make a nice lander which blends with the site... have a nice bit of audio... "hey welcome to <whatever the sites name is> today we have a special offer for this rebill which will rip you off but in the process make me some money and i wont feel guilty because i like money.. yada yada yada you get the idea"

Any thoughts?

According to one source I talked to a while back, CPV is supposed to be black hat.

For audio, try submitting your audio pages first and see if they get approved - depending on the network, there's a good chance they will be approved.

Some networks allow ad rotations, some do not. I get those rotations approved prior to running campaigns on those networks that allow rotations.

However, once I had a rotation that wasn't approved and when I realized it, I paused the campaign and fixed it. So that's probably the most black hat I have gotten because I've been free to run so many different things with CPV (and with approval).

That freedom is what makes CPV nice.

I would be careful about cookie stuffing, i.e. precidence set by digitalpoint, although it seems very unlikely it will be discovered.

My advice would be to look around lots -- and try submitting your favorite ads to see if they get approved.

Thanks for the interesting reply!

Window resizing is another one.... thinking of testing this out... so it maximises the window, that way they (hopefully) wont see it as a popup as such and close it. Handy for affiliate sites where they don't set a cookie...

With any form of online advertising you can get as shady as you want. I personally don't recommend it, but to each his own. Be warned though, major retailers and networks are pretty darn savvy to prevent this stuff (go ahead and try to stuff eBay or Amazon and see what happens!).

For me, the bigger risk would be getting kicked off the CPV network. I fully abide by Traffic Vance and DO NOT want to get booted for violating their TOS.

The other downside to blackhat stuff is that you end up spending all of your time figuring out how to hide stuff and trick the system and always wondering if you are going to get caught. For some this is a thrill, for me it is anxiety!

Some of the things you mention are ok if you do them properly. For example, you can have audio auto play as long as you have visible controls on the page to allow the user to stop it. I am doing this on Traffic Vance.

Also, you can resize a window after a click on the initial lander, which I also do. I don't auto resize the initial pop though.

Could you share the snippet of code your using for audio?

It's hard to make it cross-browser compatible.

I used embed source and then have the source as a .m3u file with the name of the file i wanted played in, but the browsers (ie, firefox) popup a plugins message. I'm going to look down the flash file, playing sound way of doing it, unless you have an ingenious method that you'd be willing to share Got my girlfriend to record a nice bit of audio work for me, i can see it as being very effective...

I use NiftyPlayer, which is a very simple flash player that uses mp3's. It is very simple to set up.

You can find it here: http://www.varal.org/media/niftyplayer/

What Coop said ;-)

Although you know the risks if you are willing to dabble in blackhat. It used to be the downside was losing a few dollars in commissions or getting banned from a network or affiliate program, but that has changed and people are getting sued. So, do so at your own risk!
