Default Adware Demographics. Who uses this stuff?

I remember a post where Coach touched on putting yourself in the mind of an adware user when considering offers to promote and this got me wondering who these people might actually be. I was wondering if anyone could touch on this subject. I've been a Mac user my whole life and I have to say that I can't think of anyone I know who has willingly downloaded Adware. Not having access to a PC I can't test these out myself (unless anyone can point me to some Mac adware toolbars, etc...).

So who are the people that actually use this stuff?

I don't know for sure who uses it, but I'm thinking it's really young teenagers -probably young teenage girls - who downloaded it in order to get free screensavers, games, etc. It's always for the free stuff and they probably don't realize what the adware is.

for a little info on trafficvance, use quantcast on their game portal, gamevance.com.
Basically its an online games site. To get futher into the games and extra features, you need to download their adware.

Quantcast says the site caters to a more female, younger following.
It also estimates that their traffic has tripled in the last three months. So it might mean there are more impressions now.

Zango.com offers games, screensavers, and more.
Quantcast shows their traffic has fallen, almost opposite of TV. It show young but slightly older than TV.

But you have to remember what quantcast is telling us. It if has that is female and younger, it just that compared to an internet average the site has more of that group than the others. There are still others of all the "groups". So I think it will have a lot more to do with your targeting then the demographics of the whole system. So if you targeting teen domains, you should get a lot of traffic. If you are targeting older mens domains, you will get less traffic. It doesnt mean it wont be sucessful.

I tested a campaigned aimed at older successful men, which is basically the opposite of the gamevance demographics, using domains like barrons.com, bloomberg.com, and forbes.com. There was plenty of traffic and doubt teens are going to those sites.

And for those that dont know, Traffic Vance has two versions of their adware. One is for serving pop-ups. The other is for creating keyword text ads on a browser window. You know, the kind with a double underline and when you scroll over, it opens an ad window.
Its supposed to be a random 50% chance on which download a person gets.

So that would mean if we are only targeting pop ups, we are only seeing 50% of the traffic they have.
I am not saying to run the text ads. I tried a few and it didnt work for me. The other problem is that its a min of 15 cents but it is PPC. So you could test it.
Oh, you will have to write an ad. That is the part I hate.

I'm curious....how well did the campaigns you ran on barrons, bloomberg, forbes, etc. targeted to an older male demographic convert?

I only tested one offer that my AM said would be good for that demograpics. It didnt convert. If I find another offer for them I would try it again.

The best demographic for adware is people who are looking for:

1.) Free stuff
2.) Downloads of some sort
3.) It's not all young teeny boppers, (think middle aged women too).
