Default The Sniper Method Explained

The Sniper Method

The sniper method, in it's most basic terms, is popping your affiliate offer on the specific 'action' or 'buy' page of an offer.

For example, you are not limited to targeting only a base url such as http://www.example.com, you can also target http://www.example.com/orderpage.html. By targeting the order page you are ensured people are in buy mode and are ready to purchase the product (or fill out the lead).

You can approach this two ways; first you can combine this with the self targeting method and pop up the same offer as the site you are on, or you can display a competitors offer. Of course, it is worth testing both!

Here is an example using the dating niche. Let's say you found an offer for SinglesNet.com that you would like to promote. The first way would be to find out every url that allows a signup to occur such as http://www.singlesnet.com/?setlocation=signup. There may be a number of landing pages and entry points so do your research! On that sign up page you can then pop your offer for SinglesNet from the affiliate network. You are banking on the fact that a percentage of people will fill out your form in the popup window as opposed to the window beneath.

The second way to do this would be to simply pop up a competitors offer such as Mate1.com. If the user is ready to sign up for a dating site perhaps you can entice them to a different site with a better looking picture or some other differentiators.

That is the basic method. Remember to think outside the box and be creative!

Default Getting Away With Sniper Method

I know that PPV networks do not technically allow the Sniper method (although it is not too hard to get around). However, do CPA networks frown upon this method as well? Can you get banned from CPA networks for using this method? Also, if you cloak your keywords, how will the advertiser or CPA network find out? From the "referrer" website?

I don't think there are any 'rules' about sniping as long as you are not self-targeting. In other words, popping a competing offer is ok, but the same exact offer is frowned upon.

As for getting booted from CPA networks, that all depends on the terms of the offer. Most offers lay out restrictions for you that you need to follow.

Also, here is another way to use this method for those of you that are reading ;-)

Offering a bonus package or building a list:

Let's say you are targeting Keyword Elite's buy page, you can pop your own lander with a giant alert that says something to the effect of "Would you like to receive these free bonuses with your purchase?" and then direct them down a path to sign up for your email list (and then immediately send them your affiliate link and bonuses).

This is the basic idea, I am sure you all can fill in the details and/or think a bit more outside the box to come up with other ways to capitalize on this! :-)

Default Self Targeting

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant popping the same site as the targeted site. For example, if you have a dating site, keyword targeting the "join now" section of an offer and then popping that same offer in front. So if there are no terms by the offer, you are saying the CPA network would not care?

I'm not saying they wouldn't care, I am saying it would not be against their TOS ;-) Of course, if they found out I would suspect that they would frown upon this and ask you to stop traffic. So, yes, this is a gray area that you should approach with caution. The chances though of them researching their offers on CPV pop-ups are probably minimal (exceptions to this are the huge players like eBay, Amazon, Geico, etc.).

I am not saying it is right or wrong to run this method, but want to be clear it IS a method and it does work if you find the right offer.
